My WOW Moment
As we walked down the streets of Florence during our introductory tour of Florence, I was not expecting to turn the corner off a small street to encounter the most famous building in Florence. I had read about il Duomo’s famous dome in the Rick Steves’ guidebook and had seen it from a distance from our hotel’s 2nd floor terrace across the Arno river.
But that is not what made me literally say “Wow”. It was the enormity of the structure and the vibrancy of the green, white and pink marble façade that made it my favorite moment of the tour.
Dome Interior
Don’t get me wrong, the dome is incredible. I wish I had seen the PBS show Great Cathedral Mystery prior to the visit. It made me appreciate the dome even more.
Top of the Dome
Of course, I wanted to climb to the top of the dome to get the full experience. The next day Darrell and I and a couple other tour group members returned to make the climb up the 463 steps to the top of the dome. The views were spectacular and worth navigating through the VERY narrow passageways. Prepare to get up close and personal with many new friends!
